Nippers at Durban Surf is all about learning new skills, gaining confidence in the sea, having fun in a safe beach environment and making new friends. Surf lifesaving is an amazing activity for growing a child’s confidence, knowledge and skills in the beach environment. North Beach, Durban is our classroom, where the kids learn all about, board paddling, body-surfing, duck-diving, spotting a rip and first aid, to name a few things. Kids must be able to swim however. The most important thing about Nippers is having fun with new friends and discovering things about themselves. Nippers gain confidence in the sea by passing swimming tests and basic lifesaving skills.Nippers (and Nippletts) is a junior program that introduces all children aged 5 to 13 years (age for a season is calculated as of September 30) to Surf Lifesaving. It is a fun outdoors activity that develops a child’s confidence in the sea, safety knowledge and teaches valuable life skills. Our coaches have many years’ experience in competing at the highest level and are all life members of the club. Their commitment and knowledge is unparalleled, which shows in the results that the kids produce, as well as the endless smiles we see on their little faces.
The youth of today are the future of Surf Life Saving and Nippers teaches them lessons and skills allowing them to continue in lifesaving and sport as they grow older. But it’s not all hard work. We like to call it serious fun! Nippers is a great way for children to make friends while being active and enjoying the beach in a safe, fun environment. The life skills learnt at Nippers will stick to the soul like bubble-gum to your shoes and be carried for life.
